What a busy week I had!
It made for more exciting entries into my “Sketchy Style” journal though…because I’m all for dressing down when there’s no real social activities on my agenda. (notice Monday and Friday when all I did was work then hit the gym…yeah, BORING)
First up was Tuesday…the Lower East Side Girls’ Club Fat Tuesday party at Le Poisson Rouge. Then Wednesday…dinner & drinks with my BFF, Amy, who’s been in NYC for the Toy Fair (she works at Faber Casteel, so naturally she’s an exhibitor), and then Thursday…VALENTINE’S DAY!
Phew…busy week, but not busy enough to keep me from whipping out the ol’ markers and colored pencils I’ve been hoarding ever since fashion school.
So, a little background on this “sketchy” thing I’m up to…I’ve been noticing how I need to hone my illustration skills a little moreso, bust out of my routine evening gown sketching that I do day in/day out at work. I also got motivated after viewing Honeybee Lane’s art journal in my past several visits to her blog, made me think I should document something personal, in an art form, and what better way than to do it daily, via my outfits? It’ll help me better my illustrations, as well as document what the heck I’ve been up to with my weeks. And mostly, I just want to see if I can stick this out for the next 365days…how cool will it be to have a year’s worth of illustrations, a year’s worth of blurbs about my day, a year’s worth of MY STYLE…all my own? Very Cool, if I do say so myself.
My Weekend was SKETCHY to say the least!
First off, Friday night I was snowed in, spent most of the night doodling some fashion illustrations, formulating ideas for new artistic endeavors…
Then Saturday rolled around, I hung out with my BFF, in town from Ohio, and while strolling from place to place an idea was formed…
So Sunday, after my trip to the gym (which seems to be the only thing I did that took place off of the sofa), I bought a new sketch book, and got to down to business-the business of being SKETCHY…
Soccer mom alert! But soccer moms have a knack for keeping their Keds dry…I do not.
And ya, I’m wearing Keds…not my typical, I know.
It’s raining (AGAIN), and I’m not feeling the “dress-up for work” thing today. So be it if my “casual” borders on a late 30-something midwesterner’s “going to the grocery” garb.

Today I’m getting SLICED! Actually, its just me wearing my new tshirt from The Bubble Process. I went to school with these bros, we go way back, and therefore when I see something I like by people I like…well I’m going to buy it!
Plus, who doesn’t love pizza and bicycles?
Well, as most of you have gathered, I’m not the most professional of sorts, and because I work in a creative industry (eh hem…fashion), I can dress as I please. I try to keep it somewhat office appropriate but mostly stay true to my casual laidback “cool girl” vibe. Meaning I don’t usually do hosiery, pencil skirts, and that jazz…I’ve tried, its never comfortable by the afternoon.
To make a tshirt of any sort more “office appropriate” there’s a few tricks I stick to:
- A fitted blazer/jacket over the tshirt
- Skinny Jeans, the tighter the better…the sleeker the more pulled together it looks.
- A few pieces of jewelry for accessory points (this time its my new vintage necklace from Beacon’s Closet this past weekend)
- A scarf or something around my neck (other than just the necklace), because layers and piled on stuff adds interest
- Oh, and always wear heels or a good shoe of some sort…leave the converse all-stars for the weekend.
Seriously, give it a go if you’re allowed to wear jeans to the office. Or give it ago on some casual weekend if you want to UP your style factor when running around town. I swear by it, never has it led me astray…the tshirt says casual, the jacket says business…almost like a mullet all over my body!
